Postpartum Warning Signs Checklist

Know when to call your doctor or go to the ER. Print this. Keep it visible. Share it with your partner.

Your body goes through enormous changes after birth. Some symptoms are normal recovery. Others need immediate attention. Check off anything you experience and trust your instincts: if something feels wrong, call.

Quick Reference: Normal Recovery vs. Warning Sign

Symptom Normal Recovery Warning Sign
Bleeding Gradually lightening over 2 to 6 weeks Increasing, bright red, or large clots after week 1
Pain Mild cramping, improving daily Severe or worsening, especially with fever
Mood Occasional tearfulness in first 2 weeks Persistent sadness or detachment beyond 2 weeks
Energy Tired but able to rest when baby sleeps Unable to sleep at all, racing thoughts, panic
Discharge Gradually fading, minimal odor Foul-smelling, green/yellow, or sudden increase

What to Tell Your Provider

1When did the symptom start, and is it getting worse?
2How often is it happening (constant or intermittent)?
3What have you tried so far, and did anything help?
4Are you experiencing fever, chills, or dizziness?

Your Postpartum Check-ins

Recovery doesn't end when you leave the hospital. ACOG recommends ongoing care, not a single visit.
