Twin vs Twin XL: Dimensions, Fit, and Which to Choose
Reading Time - ...
Bought twin sheets that won't reach the last corner? You probably have a Twin XL. I thought sleep space confusion would be behind me once my toddler started climbing out of the crib but the world of bedding wasn’t done with me yet.
Twin vs. Twin XL comes down to one number: length. Both mattresses are 38 inches wide. A Twin is 75 inches long, and a Twin XL is 80, so a fitted sheet made for one rarely fits the other.
That 5-inch gap becomes a factor in three different family decisions: a toddler leaving the crib, a teen packing for a dorm, and a new bunk bed. Here's how to measure, buy, and plan for both sizes.

Key Summary

What Are the Exact Twin vs Twin XL Dimensions?

The dimensions of Twin and Twin XL beds differ in one place only: length. Width stays at 38 inches. Here's how both compare with the beds on either side of them.

That extra 5 inches makes a Twin XL about 7% longer. It also explains a handy fact: two Twin XLs side by side measure 76 x 80, the size of a King.
Twin XL vs Full: Which Way Do You Need to Grow?
A Full is 16 inches wider than a Twin XL but 5 inches shorter. Pick the Twin XL for height and the Full for elbow room. Our guide to the 54 x 75 Full mattress covers that size in detail.
Do this: measure the sleeper's height and the room's narrowest wall before you pick a size.
Do Twin Sheets Fit a Twin XL?
No. The width matches, so the sheet looks close in the package. The length doesn't, and a fitted sheet has no spare fabric to stretch 5 inches.
What the 5-Inch Gap Does to a Fitted Sheet
- Twin sheet on a Twin XL: the last corner won't reach, or it pops off overnight.
- Twin XL sheet on a Twin: 5 inches of slack wrinkles and bunches at the foot.
- Flat sheets and comforters: more forgiving. A Twin comforter just looks short on an XL.
Why the Label Won't Settle It
Retailers label sets as "Twin", "Twin/Twin XL" or "Single" with little consistency. The size name is a guess. The inches are the answer.
Do this: find the length in inches on the package. If you can't see 75 or 80, don't buy it.
How Deep Should the Sheet Pocket Be?
Right size, wrong depth is the second most common fit problem. The pocket is the fabric that wraps down the mattress sides. If it is shallower than the mattress, the corners ride up no matter how exact the length is.
How to Measure Your Mattress Depth
Mattress depth varies a lot. College dorm mattresses often run about 7 inches, as Duke's housing specs show. Home mattresses with toppers can be twice that.
Measuring Step by Step
- Strip the bed down to the bare mattress.
- Measure at a corner, from the flat top to the bottom seam. The middle can bulge and read high.
- Add the height of any topper, pad, or waterproof protector.
- Buy a pocket 1 to 2 inches deeper than that total.
Do this: write your total depth on your phone so you have it in the store.
When Should Your Toddler Move From a Crib to a Twin?
When the toddler starts leaning dangerously over the railing, or trying to climb out, that’s the signal to move them to a bed. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises a move to another bed at 35 inches tall. The same applies once the crib rail sits below about chest level.
Toddler Bed or Straight to a Twin?
- Toddler bed: the federal standard describes it as a bed intended to take a full-size crib mattress. It's for children at least 15 months old and up to 50 pounds. It sits low, and your crib mattress moves over.
- Straight to a Twin: takes up more floor space and has a higher edge. Portable bed rails are intended for children who can get in and out of an adult bed unassisted, typically 2 to 5 years old.
- Skip the Twin XL here: if a toddler gains nothing from 80 inches. It just eats floor space.
Moving to a toddler bed first keeps the same mattress, so the same 28 x 52 crib sheets still fit.
Bedding for the First Big-Kid Bed
- Use a fitted sheet sized to the exact mattress. Loose fabric is a tangle risk for a child climbing in and out.
- Keep the bed low and clear the floor around it.
- Track height alongside the other toddler milestones so the move doesn't sneak up on you.
Do this: measure your toddler against a wall this week. Plan the move before the first climb, not after.
Will the Bed Fit Your Room, Doorway and Stairs?
Plan for the mattress plus a walkway. A common rule is 24 inches of clear floor on the open side and at the foot. Frames add a few more inches, so check the frame listing too.

Doorways and Stairwells
- Mattresses flex and travel on their side, so most pass through a standard doorway.
- Rigid parts cause the trouble: box springs, foundations, and bunk side rails.
- Check the tightest stair turn. A 36 x 36 inch landing has a diagonal of about 51 inches. An 80-inch rigid piece can't pivot flat there, so it must tilt up, and that needs headroom.
Do this: measure door width, landing size, and ceiling height at the turn. Compare them with the longest rigid piece before delivery day.
What Changes With Bunk Beds and Trundles?

Depth matters more on bunks than anywhere else. Federal rules require upper-bunk guardrails to sit at least 5 inches above the mattress, measured with the thickest mattress the maker allows. A thicker mattress eats that margin.
- Use the maximum mattress thickness listed in the bunk manual, never more.
- Match low-profile mattresses with shallow-pocket sheets, so no loose fabric hangs at the rail.
- Check both bunks. Twin-over-Full bunks need two different sheet sizes.
- Children under 6 should not sleep on the top bunk, per AAP bunk bed guidance.
Trundle Depth Limits
A trundle has to roll under the main bed, so the maker sets a maximum mattress height. Go over it and the drawer rubs or won't close. Size the sheet pocket to that thin mattress, not your main bed.
Do this: find the maximum mattress thickness in the bunk or trundle manual and stick to it.
When Is a Twin XL Actually Worth It?
Worth it when:
- You want to buy only one bed after the crib.
- Your teen is close to 6 feet or growing fast.
- College is coming. Most residence halls use Twin XL, and schools like the University of Minnesota tell students to bring Twin XL sheets. Some halls differ, so check.
- You may pair two into a split King later.
Skip it when:
- Multiple siblings will cycle through different bed sizes. My toddler bed stayed in rotation for years as my kids grew out of the crib. My youngest has just been moved to it.
- The sleeper is a toddler or young child.
- The extra 5 inches blocks a door, closet, or drawer.
Do this: if you do buy the XL for a teen, buy XL bedding once. It goes straight to the dorm.
From Crib Sheets to Dorm Sheets: Buying the Right Size Each Time
Every bed your child sleeps in has its own numbers. Check three things each time: length, width, and mattress depth. Then buy the sheet that matches all three.
If your toddler is moving to a toddler bed, the mattress stays the same, so the sheet can too. Joey & Joan makes 100% jersey cotton, OEKO-TEX certified fitted sheets for standard 28 x 52 crib and toddler mattresses. Find the sheet made for your little one's bed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Twin the same as a Single?
Yes. In the US, "Single" and "Twin" both mean a 38 x 75 inch mattress.
Can two adults share a Twin XL?
Not comfortably. Each person gets 19 inches of width, less than a crib mattress.
Will a Twin XL mattress fit a standard Twin frame?
No. The frame is 5 inches too short, so the mattress overhangs unless the frame is adjustable.
Can I put a crib mattress on a Twin frame?
No. The 2026 toddler bed standard notes a Twin frame is not intended to take a crib mattress because of the gaps it leaves.
Do Twin XL sheets fit a split King?
Yes. A split King is two Twin XLs, so each half takes its own Twin XL fitted sheet.
Does a Twin XL comforter work on a Twin?
Yes. It just hangs a little lower at the foot.
